The safe BBQ!

The sun's out and the sun's shining, but we're confined to our homes, so we're always looking for something to do... Wouldn't this be the perfect opportunity to embark on your first barbecue of the year? Certainly, but before you get down to it, it might be a good idea to review a few rules for a safe BBQ. Here they are!

I don't need to remind you that this is not the time to be clogging up the already overloaded emergency services after injuring yourself while barbecuing... So to avoid it, let's take a few precautions.

1. Choose an unobstructed location

Don't install your Kokko just anywhere. Be sure to place it in an area that is sufficiently clear of any flammable substances or materials: wood, branches, dry leaves, trees, chemicals, etc. Maintain a perimeter of at least 1.50m. The ground must also be sufficiently stable. Of course, you should never set up your barbecue indoors, as the fumes from burning charcoal could poison you.

2. Opt for natural ignition

If simply using newspaper isn't enough to light your barbecue, you're probably using firelighters. Whether they're in the form of briquettes, logs or balls, always choose natural products and never use gasoline or methylated spirits, which fan the flames and could injure you. Leave your lighter in your pocket and take out your matchbox.

For a successful barbecue, good charcoal is essential. Find out how to choose the right charcoal.

3. Use appropriate utensils

Forget the table fork for turning sausages on the grill. To avoid burning yourself, use special barbecue utensils, i.e. with a long handle so you don't put your hand over the flames or embers, but also with a coating that doesn't conduct heat. Also invest in a pair of heat-resistant gloves, which are more practical for handling dishes and utensils than special barbecue potholders, which can nevertheless do the job just as well.

4. Keep him under surveillance from start to finish

Once lit, it's important to keep an eye on your barbecue at all times, especially if it's windy or children are around. Under no circumstances should they go near it, even when it's finished, as the embers will remain very hot for several hours. However, should a fire break out, make sure you always have water, a fire extinguisher or sand close to your barbecue to put it out quickly and prevent it spreading.
